When athletic teams were first fielded by Massachusetts Agricultural College, the popular nickname was "Statesmen," in honor of the roles of Massachusetts statesmen in the founding of the country. Although "Aggies" was also used, by 1948 the school, which had changed their name to the University of Massachusetts the year before, decided a new nickname was in order. From the leading choices, Redmen was chosen, both for the roles Native Americans served in the history of the Commonwealth and for their "strength and fierceness in defending his lands."
However, by 1972, Native Americans in the region were calling the choice of nickname into question for the derogatory connotations of the name. The administration began requesting that the name was used as little as possible, and by the end of the 1972 spring semester, the Board of Trustees chose to change the nickname to Minutemen, one of the choices that was a finalist in 1948. The name was chosen for its ties to the history of the Commonwealth, as the Minutemen were instrumental in the early stages of the American Revolution. Though there was some controversy in the 1990s over the mascot being perceived as "a symbol of oppression," the mascot has remained the Minutemen and Minutewomen.

The area is home to the Five College Consortum. A group of five colleges: The University of Massachusetts, Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. Legend has it that these five schools represent the five characters of Scooby Doo. Velma represents Smith, Daphne as Mount Holyoke, Fred as Amherst College, Shaggy and Hampshire, and Scooby as UMass.
The Town is home to many great places to grab some food or drinks. One of the most popular is the Hanger Pub and Grill, recently combined with Amherst Brewing Company. They are best known for their wings, but they also have a wide assortment of other delicious pub food. They have a great selection of draft beers as well. The town center also houses many other restaurants. Whether your looking for a nice sit down meal at Judy’s or some Italian at Pasta e Basta. Or if you want to grab a quick meal White Hut has some great, cheap burgers and Bueno y Sauno blows Chipotle out of the water. One of the landmark eateries is Antonios pizza, amazing toppings and late night dollar cheese slices.
If your looking to get some drinks the center also hosts a large number of bars, if you don’t mind large, occasionally rowdy crowds full of college student. Stackers, McMurphys, High Horse, Monkey bar, the spoke, and others.

On March 6, 2015, UMass faced Notre Dame in Game 1 of the Opening Round of the 2015 Hockey East Men's Ice Hockey Tournament, played at Compton Family Ice Arena at Notre Dame. Early into the game, Sam Herr gave Notre Dame the lead on a rebounded shot. Vince Hinostroza made it 2-0 midway through the second period. But the Minutemen responded two minutes later with a power play goal by Steven Iacobellis. Notre Dame responded three minutes later with a Steven Fogarty goal to make it 3-1. UMass made it 3-2 a minute later with a goal by Shane Walsh. With two seconds remaining in the period, Troy Power tipped a power play goal to tie the game as the second period (a period that had five goals in total) ended. The third period ended with no goals, as the two teams went into overtime. The two teams kept shooting shots that missed, with UMass shooting a record 91 times and Notre Dame shooting 78 times. With 8:18 left in the fifth overtime and at 1:24 a.m. ET, Shane Walsh scored the game winning goal to end the longest Division I hockey game which had lasted 151 minutes, 42 seconds, besting the previous record of 150:22, set by Quinnipiac and Union in 2010. Steve Mastalerz finished the night with 75 saves for UMass while Cal Petersen of Notre Dame made 87 saves, setting a new NCAA record. It was UMass' first win at the Tournament since March 13, 2009 at Northeastern.

The university was founded in 1863 under the provisions of the Federal Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act to provide instruction to Massachusetts citizens in the "agricultural, mechanical, and military arts." Accordingly, the university was initially named theMassachusetts Agricultural College, popularly referred to as "Mass Aggie" or "M.A.C." In 1867, the college had yet to admit any students, had been through two Presidents, and still had not completed any college buildings. In that year, William S. Clark was appointed President of the college and Professor of Botany. He quickly appointed a faculty, completed the construction plan, and in the fall of 1867 admitted the first class of approximately 50 students. Clark became the first functioning President and arguably the primary founding father of the college.
The original buildings consisted of Old South College (a dormitory located on the site of the present South College), North College (a second dormitory once located just south of today's Machmer Hall), the Chemistry Laboratory, also known as College Hall (once located on the present site of Machmer Hall), the Boarding House (a small dining hall located just north of the present Campus Parking Garage), the Botanic Museum (located on the north side of the intersection of Stockbridge Road and Chancellor's Hill Drive) and the Durfee Plant House (located on the site of the new Durfee Conservatory). Although enrollment was slow during the 1870s, the fledgling college built momentum under the leadership of President Henry Hill Goodell. In the 1880s, Goodell implemented an expansion plan, adding the College Drill Hall in 1883 (the first gymnasium), the Old Chapel Library in 1885 (one of the oldest extant buildings on campus and an important symbol of the University), and the East and West Experiment Stations in 1886 and 1890. The Campus Pond, now the central focus of the University Campus, was created in 1893 by damming a small brook. The early 20th century saw great expansion in terms of enrollment and the scope of the curriculum. The first female student was admitted in 1875 on a part-time basis and the first full-time female student was admitted in 1892. In 1903, Draper Hall was constructed for the dual purpose of a dining hall and female housing. The first female students graduated with the class of 1905. The first dedicated female dormitory, the Abigail Adams House (on the site of today's Lederle Tower) was built in 1920. By the start of the 20th century, the college was thriving and quickly expanded its curriculum to include the liberal arts. In recognition of the higher enrollment and broader curriculum, the college was renamed Massachusetts State College in 1931. Following World War II, the G.I. I don’t know, getting drunk and rowdy, I haven’t been there in a while. I guess tailgaiting at the homecoming football game and then not going to the actual game is a pretty treasured tradition.
Academics
The school is actually great academically. Its unfortunate that it has the reputation of Zoomass. It was recently ranked 76th best national university and 30th amongst public universities. You really can’t go wrong with a major here. Engineering, Computer science, and business are all well regarded here. The school also has great science programs and arts programs.
The Honors college is very well regarded as well. I was accepted… however I did not actually finish the honors college requirements… Oops. No matter I’m in med school doing alright for myself I’d say.

What is and what is to come
This school is definitely trending upwards. It gets more and more selective each year. Anyone from Massachusetts I strongly recommend saving some cash and attending this great school. They have some older, kind of gross buildings, but they also have a large amount of new state of the art buildings. Out of state as well. I was an out of state student; if you’re from New England you can look into their regional program. If you state school doesn't have a major that UMass offers you can receive a reduced tuition rate. Sure our Hockey program isn’t the greatest and its unfortunate that the school puts more money into the football team, but the games are free for students and still a blast to attend.
